Happy birthday to me! I’m 43 today.
I’m not a huge fan of birthdays, but back in 2011 I celebrated my 40th birthday in style by running the 40th BMO Vancouver Marathon.
The course was quite a bit different back then, with a lot of turns, and not much of the scenery that the current route features. Still, that first year I fell in love with this event and this will be my third time running the race in the last four years.
If you ask me what it is about Vancouver that keeps me coming back it’s three things:
- I love the city. Vancouver has always been a favourite place for me to visit. I went there back in the mid-90’s and enjoyed my couple of days there. Since then Ginny and I have been back a few times and we’ve never not had a great visit.
- It’s a great race. The organization is first-class, and the city really gets into the race weekend. There are banners up around the city. Unlike Toronto, where the city seems annoyed by the marathon, in Vancouver, the city seems to get excited about it.
- The course is spectacular. You can’t imagine the views along the course. Between snow capped mountains on the Island seen from the campus of UBC, to the run around Stanley Park, it’s a fantastic course from start to finish.
